Project: Know Your Place: KYPExplore Touring Exhibition

Collaborators: SGCC, Know Your Place, 20+ content partners, Hotrod Creations, City-Insights

Know Your Place is a large scale heritage mapping project to collect and share the local heritage stories of the West of England.

SGCC wanted to create a touring exhibition to take these stories out onto the road and bring them back to the places and communities where they originated. The exhibition needed to be physical and digital, as well as easy to transport and install.

Through workshops with more than 20 content partners - local museums, collections and archives - we developed a co-creative process, including resources and templates, for transforming their archive materials into engaging digital stories.

We built a tailored digital storytelling platform for SGCC, using the flexible digital software created by City-Insights, host the content and create an interactive hotspot map. The platform linked seamlessly to the Know Your Place online heritage map. We also trained SGCC teams on how to use the backend CMS (Content Management System), giving them end to end control of their content and the ability to add, remove and edit content at any time.

With Hotrod Creations, we designed a set of four bespoke illuminated Interactive LightCubes, installations that could put up and taken down by two people in around 20 minutes. We developed a flatpack design, meaning the LightCubes could be transported in the back of a small van, and all they needed to run was a single mains plug socket and access to the WiFi.

This digital platform enabled visitors to access all the local heritage stories using touchscreens integrated into the LightCube design. It also makes all content accessible to anyone through smartphones, tablets and PCs, without any need for downloads.
